Road trip in 2023.

This year we only made one road trip using our brand new Tesla model Y.
With the extra range compared to our model S, we could embark on a road trip that we had been wanting to do for years, namely travelling the Norwegian Scenic Route of Helgelandskysten.

Day one, July 22 2023.

Day one is transport only, to Trondheim. After a short stop at our local church, St. Olav kirke, we made a short stop in Elverum, and had lunch in Alvdal (both places has Tesla superchargers).

In Trondheim we had dinner at Benja Siam Syd, a Thai restaurant that was next to our hotel.

Day two, July 23 2023.

Day two is also a transport leg, entering the scenic road at the end.

The day started with a visit to St. Olav Domkirke in Trondheim.

We had lunch and charged the car in Grong, and took some stops to strech our legs, here at the south end of Øyvatnet.

We finally get to the start of the scenic route of Helgelandskysten.

We have the first of many ferry crossings. Many of the ferries in Norway are now electrified.

Our room for the night at Sømna Kro & Gjestegård.

Day three, July 24 2023.

Day three was supposed to start with a short ferry crossing from Horn to Andalsvågen, but we got on to the wrong ferry ending up on Igerøya instead.

We had to wait several hours on Igerøya for a ferry that went in the direction we wanted, but that's ok, since we saved some actual driving this way.

There was a food truck with Thai food there, so we bought lunch and had a picnic while waiting.

There was a Gray heron sitting in the knotted wrack at low tide.

Once we got under way again, we passed by salmon rearing nets.

Day four, July 25 2023.

We stayed the night in Mo i Rana. Next day the first ferry was from Kilboghavn to Jektvik. On the way we stopped to admire the scenery.

The actual ferry trip was somewhat of a disaster. The ferry was going to make a stop at Sørfjorden, and any cars that were going to disembark there had to turn around so that they pointed the other way than the rest of the cars.

It so happened that a car with a boat on a trailer did exactly that. The driver was looking at the wrong person on deck, and did not realize that he was backing up into our car. We were already in the lounge, and did not see what happened.

The outboard engine of the boat sliced neatly into the trunk hatch of our car. Fortunately it did not damage any critical parts, so we got help patching the hole with duct tape, and could continue our trip.

We drove around for several months after this before the hatch could be replaced.

More beautiful scenes. At one point we stopped across the fjord from Svartisen.

Shortly after this stop, we came to a rest area where GI made lunch.

We arrive at Salstraumen Hotel, the farthest north we went on this trip.

Mandatory pictures of our dinner.

A view from the hotel towards Saltstraumen with the bridge crossing it.

Day five, July 26 2023.

Next morning with selfies outside the hotel, and our breakfast.

Today we drove the exact same route as yesterday, only in the opposite direction.

While waiting for a ferry, there was time for a hot dog.

The ferry from Jektvik to Kilboghavn is fairly long, it takes around one hour. It crosses the Arctic Circle.

Day six, July 27 2023.

Day six was the reverse of day three, except that we did not detour to Igerøya. But we did take a detour to Torghatten before arriving at Sømna Kro & Gjestegård.

Day seven, July 28 2023.

Transport back to Trondheim. We found a rest area close by a nice little lake with water lilies, a little south of Grong.

GI made lunch here.

The hotel we stayed at in Trondheim both going and coming.

Day eight, July 29 2023.

Last day of our trip. A short stop at Kongsvold Fjeldstue for pictures.
